Quick answer

Portugal’s flag divides a 2:3 field vertically into two-fifths dark green at the hoist and three-fifths scarlet at the fly, with the national arms centered over the division.

Specification

The flag’s height is two-thirds of its length. Dark green occupies two-fifths of the length and scarlet the remaining three-fifths. A yellow armillary sphere, bearing the national shield, is centered on the dividing line; the sphere’s diameter equals half the flag’s height.

Construction notes

Start with a 2:3 rectangle and place the vertical division at two-fifths of its length from the hoist. Center the armillary sphere on that line and midway between the upper and lower edges. The shield sits vertically centered over the sphere; its detailed castles, escutcheons, and bezants should be taken from an authoritative vector rather than redrawn as generic symbols.

Historical record

After the Republic was established on 5 October 1910, a commission prepared new national symbols. The government approved the design on 29 November 1910. The National Constituent Assembly ratified the flag on 19 June 1911, and detailed construction regulations followed on 30 June.

How to interpret the display colors

The RGB values in the imported Display colors section are screen approximations. The supplied record does not establish them as normative manufacturing specifications for textiles or print. The Presidency drawing reference distinguishes descriptive color requirements from values used to produce its digital illustration. Digital swatches should therefore not be treated as authoritative dye, ink or customary manufacturing standards. The Wikimedia reference documents the imported artwork; it does not establish an official manufacturing color standard.

Proportions and emblem placement

The overall ratio is 2:3 (height:length): the flag is three units long for every two units high. The separate green-to-red ratio of 2:3 describes the widths of the colored panels. Green occupies two-fifths of the length at the hoist, the pole side; red occupies three-fifths toward the fly, the free edge.

The emblem is centered on the color division, two-fifths of the length from the hoist, rather than at the horizontal midpoint. It sits halfway between the top and bottom edges. A yellow armillary sphere, depicted as interlocking rings, bears the national shield. The sphere’s diameter is half the flag’s height, excluding protrusions beyond its outer circumference. The shield is centered vertically over the sphere. These construction relationships follow the Presidency drawing instructions.

Distinct stages in the flag's adoption. The government approval date is retained from the imported Historical record; the Presidency archive supports the republican context and June 1911 decrees.
