Engineering tools

Small, transparent calculators for flag drawing, fabrication, measurement, and screen reference.

Ratio calculator

Enter the finished fly width and the flag’s hoist-to-fly ratio. Results use the same unit as the width entered.

Color converter

Translate a six-digit HEX screen color to RGB and HSL notation. These conversions are mathematical; they do not replace an official physical color standard.

HEX#DA291C
RGB218, 41, 28
HSL4°, 77%, 48%

Unit converter

Convert a production measurement between millimetres, centimetres, inches, and feet.

Usage notes

Calculator results are deterministic and may be rounded for display. Fabrication requires seam, hem, and attachment allowances that are outside the geometric flag dimensions. Always retain the unrounded value through production calculations.

Understanding hoist:fly ratios

Hoist means the flag’s height; fly means its width. Ratios here are written as hoist:fly, so 2:3 means two units of height for every three units of width.

For an illustrative 2:3 flag with a finished fly of 150 cm, calculate the hoist as 150 × 2 ÷ 3 = 100 cm. The finished flag is therefore 100 cm high and 150 cm wide. The result uses the same unit as the entered fly. This example illustrates the calculation; it does not specify the ratio for any particular flag.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose the applicable flag ratio?

Use the Flag Index to find the relevant flag record, then read its proportions and supporting evidence. Retain any qualifications about the flag’s version, period or use, and distinguish an official specification from customary manufacture. If the record describes a ratio as customary or uncertain, keep that qualification when using the result. The calculator applies the ratio you enter; it does not establish an official specification.

Do the calculated dimensions include fabrication allowances?

No. Calculated dimensions describe the finished flag. Seam, hem and attachment allowances are additional fabrication requirements and are excluded from these dimensions. Displayed results may be rounded; retain the unrounded value through production calculations.

Reading color and measurement outputs

HEX means hexadecimal notation; a six-digit HEX screen color encodes red, green and blue values. RGB stands for red, green and blue. HSL stands for hue, saturation and lightness, with hue expressed in degrees and saturation and lightness as percentages.

The illustrative examples below show inputs and outputs in text, so they can be read without identifying a color swatch or interacting with a calculator. Converting screen notation is a mathematical operation; it does not replace an official physical color standard or establish an official flag color.
